Tigers win 8th rivalry game in 9 years over Gameco*cks

COLUMBIA, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - FOX Carolina provided LIVE updates during Clemson’s 16-7 win over South Carolina in the 120th Palmetto Bowl at Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday night.

10:55 p.m.

Clemson runs out the clock to defeat South Carolina 16-7 in the Palmetto Bowl for its 8th rivalry-game win in the last 9 seasons.

The Tigers win without scoring an offensive touchdown and only allowing the Gameco*cks to score one touchdown the entire game.

10:45 p.m.

South Carolina turns the ball over on downs at their own 35 yard line while trailing 16-7 with just over 3 minutes left in the game.

10:35 p.m.

The defensive battle continues as Clemson still leads South Carolina 16-7 with 6:04 left in the game.

The only scoring in the second half has been a Clemson field goal.

Third Quarter

A Clemson field goal is the only scoring of the quarter. After an extremely exciting start to the Palmetto Bowl, the action cooled down quite a bit.

Clemson takes a 16-7 lead into the fourth quarter.

10:05 p.m.

South Carolina defensive back O’Donnell Fortune goes down and an injury timeout is called after a play on defense.

9:45 p.m.

At the start of the third quarter, Clemson kicker Jonathan Weitz hits his third field goal of the game. He made this one from 42 yards out to give the Tigers a 16-7 lead.

On the Tigers’ next offensive possession, quarterback Cade Klubnik lofts one to the end zone for Greenville native Tyler Brown, but South Carolina’s Nick Emmanwori wrestles it away from him for a Gameco*cks interception.

Halftime

Clemson leads the Gameco*cks 13-7 behind two long Jonathan Weitz field goals and a fumble the Tigers returned for a touchdown on South Carolina’s first offensive possession. Luke Doty scored a 1-yard rushing touchdown on a double handoff for the Gameco*cks only score.

8:53 p.m.

After hitting a 50-yard field goal in the first quarter, Clemson kicker Jonathan Weitz nails a 49-yarder with 5:07 left in the second quarter.

Clemson leads 13-7.

8:26 p.m.

At the start of the second quarter, South Carolina running back Mario Anderson takes a hit and following the play appears to lose his balance. Anderson goes down and its tended to by medical staff. He walked off the field under his own power.

8:15 p.m.

Clemson goes back on top 10-7 with a 50-yard field goal from Jonathan Weitz.

8:05 p.m.

South Carolina ties it up!

The Gameco*cks run a double handoff and Luke Doty scores on a 1-yard run.

South Carolina ties the game 7-7 with 6:39 left in the 1st quarter.

7:55 p.m.

Clemson records two takeaways on South Carolina in the first 45 seconds of the game.

The first takeaway was a scoop ‘n’ score. South Carolina’s Spencer Rattler threw a backwards pass intended for Xavier Legette who couldn’t handle it. Because it was an incomplete backwards pass, it became a fumble, which Clemson’s Khalil Barnes picked up and returned 42 yards for a touchdown.

On the next offensive play, Barnes intercepted Rattler’s deep pass.

Barnes and Clemson recorded two takeaways in three offensive plays for South Carolina.

The rivalry between South Carolina and Clemson began in 1896 and the annual matchup was officially dubbed “The Palmetto Bowl” in 2014. The game’s trophy and logo were unveiled the following year. Clemson has enjoyed a 72-43-4 (.626) edge over South Carolina since the first game was played. Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney won his first Palmetto Bowl against the Gameco*cks in 2008 as interim head football coach.

In 2022, South Carolina bested Clemson 31-30, in what was the Gameco*cks’ first win in the Palmetto Bowl since 2013. The win ended Carolina’s seven-game losing streak to the Tigers. Carolina head coach Shane Beamer ended the Tigers’ 40-game home winning streak; the win made Beamer the only coach in South Carolina history to win back-to-back games against top-10 teams.

The Clemson-South Carolina game was the longest continually-played rivalry in the South and the second-longest in the nation, until the game was canceled for the first time in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, breaking a 111-year streak. This year is generating tremendous buzz, with the Tigers streaking and the Gameco*cks hoping to secure a bowl berth--plus an expected appearance from former President Donald Trump.
