What type of clothing did the Renaissance wear? ›

While both men's and women's fashions were elaborate and indicative of status, they did differ in style; men's clothing often included doublets, hose, and codpieces, while women's attire consisted of gowns with voluminous skirts, tight bodices, and intricate sleeves.

MEN'S FASHIONS – PEASANT CLASS

All but the poorest would have cloth hosen (stockings) and shoes, or if he wore no hose, he would have long breeches similar to pajama pants, cross gartered from ankle to knee. Cross gartered breeches were commonly worn by the lower classes since before the Conquest in 1066.

By the time the late 16th and early 17th centuries rolled around, buttons had evolved to a fairly modern shape. The construction of buttons in this period was accomplished one of three ways; casting in metal, construction in metal, and construction from organic elements.

Renaissance art is marked by a gradual shift from the abstract forms of the medieval period to the representational forms of the 15th century. Subjects grew from mostly biblical scenes to include portraits, episodes from Classical religion, and events from contemporary life.

Nobles would have worn finely crafted linen, wool, silks, and furs. Both the undertunics and outerwear would have been heavily embroidered and might even have had precious gemstones adorning the fabrics. Noble medieval men often wore shorter outer tunics that became a surcoat or jackets.

Shirt (shurt): the basic men's undergarment. Shirts were commonly constructed of linen and featured a standing band collar and cuffs. Ruffles may be sewn into the bands in fancier versions and they could be elaborately embroidered with blackwork. Slops (slops): wide, loose fitting breeches, similar to round hose.

Swords were undoubtedly the most popular weapon owned by men in this period. In his colourful autobiography, the Florentine goldsmith and sculptor Benvenuto Cellini used the word “sword” a total of seventy-eight times.

Q: What does "Peace-tied" mean? A: Peace-tying a weapon keeps if from being used. As an example, a sword must be sheathed and the hilt of the sword must be peace-tied to the sheath so that it cannot be drawn. Arrows in a quiver must be peace-tied together and the bow unstrung.
